During my final semester of graduate school amidst the socioeconomic devastation of the COVID-19 pandemic in Ghana, a former classmate shared the plight of women weavers in Vea who had lost their livelihoods. Though initially focused on finishing my studies, the ongoing crisis spurred my husband and me, fueled by my passion for unique finds, to take action. We partnered with these talented women, and in late 2021, we launched Straworth. Our mission is to bring hope and a sustainable future to the Noyine-Maltaab community of weavers in Vea, West Africa, showcasing their unique artistry in every handwoven piece. Each purchase directly impacts their lives and helps Straworth share their stories.
